Mechanics
Kenzie is most enthralled these days by our stock of Einstein videos, so to discourage sitting in front of the TV all day, I’ve moved her and her toys into the large unused spaces of our living room. Here she takes on stacking oversized legos into a tall pillar, over and over. She assumes a dazed expression of concentration for this task – and won’t even interrupt the stacks to say “Cheeesh” for the camera.
Additionally, she has mastered the art of unlocking childproof safety locks on DVD covers. Fortunately, it’s not about getting the DVD out for watching - but more about exploring the mechanics of the lock. She’s been extracting socket covers from outlets for countless months now, so much so that we’ve masking taped some of the easier to remove ones into the socket. It’s a not-so-aesthetically pleasing element of our world these days. She’ll walk around jabbing a key at random holes, to “unlock” them for extended durations. Bet you didn’t know that you could “unlock” a pinecone?? This is another reason for permanently adhering the outlet covers where easily accessible. They are pretty easy to “unlock” with a wee bit of persistence.
Sometimes we mistake her “Ahdoit’s” when we’re holding a water bottle to mean that she’d like a drink. She’s not interested in the water, but most concerned with earning the responsibility of putting the lid back on the bottle. Ink pens are the same way. She’s not ready to draw, but just wants to reinstall the pen cap...about 30 times.
She’s truly figuring out and practicing how things "work" at a rapid pace....including her parents.
