Flutter..flutter....
"Flutter, Flutter...Look at them go!" (is a chant we picked up from a movie we borrowed from the library, and say waaaaaaaay too often.) But, it applies to what occurred this weekend.
It was the GREAT home-grown butterfly release day!!
At a birthday party for my own grandfather, we met Nana in Topeka and brought the butterfies along, so that she could witness the finale (since they were a gift from her).
I was nervous that Kenzie would be appalled at setting them free, but with ample talking up JuSt HoW ExCiTiNg It WoUlD Be! - she was ready. She suggested that she hold each one so that they could "fly off into the bright blue sky."
The only problem...was that they didn't seem to want to go. They sat on her finger for the longest time, took off....came back...landed on the ground & she picked them back up. And, then finally they were all set free. It was amazing.
And, another irony is that since we released our butterflies, we have been attracting them every where we go. We've had butterflies sitting on our shoulders, heads, and interrupting our outdoor dinners ever since we set these bugs free!
I was hoping for eggs to be laid as we DID see mating, or, well...a "butterfly dance party" as Kenzie exclaimed. Now that the boutique is empty, I don't see anything that resembles eggs. This was a fantastic experience. I do think we'll be ordering more larvae in the future so we can witness the process again.
I highly recommend this project for kids!
